Just a few years ago social media didn’t exist but now it’s seemingly unimaginable to envision life without Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and the myriad of other social media outlets. At it’s inception social media was used primarily as a means to stay connected with family, friends, musicians, etc. Now we are in the midst of a social media revolution where celebrities have captured the attention of the masses — enabling them to promote their sponsors, charities, and events to an increasingly large and captivated audience. Gone is the day when celebrities played minor roles in the social media landscape. Services like Facebook and Twitter have enabled celebrities to share their personality and establish their brand on a global scale. Social media can be the only way for the general population to interact with a celebrity or athlete.

Money will forever be the great motivator. Social Media has opened up a massive new market for social media sponsorship that can dramatically improve a celebrity’s net worth. New brands are always looking to gain significant exposure and become instantly credible to their target market. For the same amount of money, you have two options:

1) Purchase an commercial spot on American Idol

or

2) Purchase a series of sponsored Facebook posts from Beyonce (https://www.facebook.com/beyonce)

The answer is obvious to us (Beyonce), but even large brands continue to throw the majority of their marketing dollars at saturated marketing mediums that are losing value and audience.

- American Idol has approx. 15 milion viewers

while

- Beyonce has approx. 34 million Facebook Fans

Not only does Beyonce have more than twice the “audience,” but using a social advertising approach allows your brand to develop a distinct and direct relationship with a celebrity that immediately authenticates the brand. If Beyonce endorses your brand on her individual social media then the impression is that she personally endorses that product/brand. However, with American Idol there is no distinct or direct relationship developed between the brand and the television show. With the market becoming incredibly saturated, a TV commercial is now viewed as a distinct and completely separate entity from the actual programming. Furthermore, a commercial will not succeed in authenticating your brand because the American population is well aware that anyone can purchase commercial spots for the right price.

The name Talent Attach comes from the concept of attaching talent to films and brands. We’ve seen it a million times – Tiger Woods cruising around in a Buick commercial, Gene Simmons sipping Cherry Dr. Pepper, and Roger Federer shaving his face silky smooth with Gillette razors. Celebrity endorsements have long been an effective way for brands to raise the legitimacy of what they are doing in the eyes of potential customers.

When the University of Kentucky men’s basketball coach, John Calipari, got a taste of Lexington’s newest sensation Orange Leaf (an Oklahoma City-based “self-serve” frozen yogurt company) he saw an opportunity. Calipari bought into the franchise and went to work, although not in the traditional sense.

Calipari is the Social Media King of Kentucky with nearly 1.2 million Twitter followers and 351,700 fans on Facebook hanging on every tweet and post from the UK coach. With more than 1.5 million people listening, Calipari began sending out messages depicting his insatiable desire and love for Orange Leaf. What was most important is how organic his messages were. People began flooding the doors in search of fro-yo.

Thanks to the folks at @OrangeLeafKy for letting us stop by. You knew I couldn’t resist. twitter.com/UKCoachCalipar…

— John Calipari (@UKCoachCalipari) April 13, 2012

Orange Leaf now has 4 locations in Lexington and it wouldn’t be surprising to see more spring up around town in the near future. Calipari isn’t the first to jump on Orange Leaf, however. Cincinnati Bengal’s defensive end, Frostee Rucker has found success having opened up several stores in the Cincinnati area.

The world of professional athlete sponsorships and celebrity endorsements is not new to marketing. However, it’s obvious that there has been a new trend that heavily leans toward marketing across social media outlets. Celebrities have become influencers who are not merely seen in a commercial endorsing a product, they are speaking directly to and interacting with fans about products. This, my friends, is a powerful tool. We’ve entered a new era in the world of marketing and these powerful influencers are waiting for brands to start using it to their advantage.

In addition to changing people’s lives with Facebook, CEO Mark Zuckerberg thinks he may be able to save a few lives as well. Facebook announced Tuesday that users will now be able to share their organ donor status in the About section of their profile. Inspired by recent natural disasters, Zuckerberg believes that encouraging users to publish their organ donor status can help save lives.

In an interview regarding Facebook’s newest innovation Zuckerberg stated, “Recently, when the tornadoes came through in Missouri, a lot of people were using Facebook to organize and return items that were lost … In Japan, people were using Facebook to help locate their friends and families. So, we figured ‘could we do anything to help people solve other types of issues, like all the people who need organ donations?’”

With 18 people dying daily waiting for organ donations and with over 900 million active users, Facebook hopes to connect donors with recipients and save lives.

Users can update their organ donor status by adding a Life Event, clicking Life & Wellness, and then Organ Donor:

After much anticipation over the last couple months, Facebook has officially rolled out its Timeline format for business pages. With a new Facebook change, comes the mad dash to get your business page correctly formatted. No fear, we’re here to help ease this transition. Talent Attach presents: The top 3 things you need to know for Facebook Timeline business pages.

1) How to activate Facebook Timeline

On March 30th, Facebook announced that all pages will be transitioned to Timeline, but if your want to get ahead of the game follow the simple steps.

First you’ll need to head on over to your business page, and at the top of the page you’ll see the blurb about Timeline – click Preview, and then Publish Now.

Shazam! Now you have Timeline for your business page. Once the Timeline is active, set a beautiful cover photo and the page is all set.

2) How to reformat your Custom Tab Icon

Pre-Timeline icons meant logging in through Facebook Developers and editing your App to change your icon. Facebook is now requiring a different route, whether this will change or not is yet to be seen.

Step one is to click Manage followed by Edit Page at the top of your Facebook business page.

Click on Apps to access your list of Custom Tabs. Find the Custom Tab/App that your want to edit and click Edit Settings.

A window will pop up and click Change next to Custom Tab Image. Upload a 109×72 graphic for your button and head back to your business page to view the change.

3) What are the new dimensions for Custom Tabs?

Facebook has once again changed the dimensions of their custom tabs, leaving us to bob and weave with the new format. So what is the new size?

Facebook has widened its tabs allowing for a maximum size of 810px. For now some may find it frustrating, but the possibilities are exciting – allowing developers to legitimately create a mini-site within our tabs. For the time being, Facebook is still allowing the 520px max width, but I don’t imagine it’ll be around for good.

—

Conclusion

To round it all out, the change has a lot of people in the industry buzzing. After having Timeline around for the past couple months, it’s incredible to see how outdated the old layout appears.

It’s key to jump on the change early, rather than resist. Setting up the new layout and maximizing design will put your brand in the forefront and maximize your return. If your design is sub-par, what does that say about your brand?

Gary Payton AKA “The Glove” has won an NBA Championship. He’s been an NBA all-star nine times. He’s won two Olympic gold medals for goodness sake. What you probably don’t know about Payton is that he’s a thought leader, a major influencer, a big idea guy.

A few months ago, Payton started developing the idea for “Bring it Back to Seattle,” a campaign created to do exactly what it says, bring the Supersonics back. After all, Payton established himself as one of the league’s best point guards playing for them for nearly thirteen years. Payton has since teamed up with us at Talent Attach to put this campaign in full force. Joining together, we’re giving the people of Seattle and the rest of the nation the opportunity to have their voices heard via the best way possible: Social Media.

But just plain, old social media won’t get this campaign the exposure it needs. That’s why we at Talent Attach have created custom design and logos. On Facebook, we’ve developed custom tabs for both Payton and BIBTS, allowing fans to catch up on tweets and the latest news surrounding the campaign. One of the greatest things that has come to be is the Back to Seattle TV tab, which allows the tens of thousands of fans to watch highlights from the Supersonics history.

The ultimate goal is to get the Supersonics back. The best way to this is through the voices of the people themselves. Fans and supporters of the movement have the ability to simply go to the “Get Your Voice Heard” tab. With a simple click of a button, fans are linked to tweet directly at the people with the power in Seattle: the mayor and the governor. Followers can also choose to tweet at the big shots over at ESPN and the NBA. It seems to be working too; Colin Cowherd of Sports Nation has already become a supporter and helped pass on the message via Twitter.

Today, we live a technological age in which fans can interact with their favorite athletes across many social media platforms nearly any time of the day. Many athletes have yet to realize the full potential of social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and personal websites as an outlet to connect with fans and have not taken advantage of these tools like they need to.

Ben Revere, a graduate of Lexington Catholic High School and current Minnesota Twin, is a rising star in the MLB with a bright future. Ben is an athlete that loves his fans and understands that social media is the way to interact with them on a daily basis. Through his everyday use of Facebook and Twitter, fans are given a glimpse at life outside the baseball diamond and the hard work that goes into the star that Ben has become. We at Talent Attach have teamed up with Ben to give him a complete upgrade of his social media platforms.

Currently, we have designed a website that gives fans a Ben’s biography, a statistics page for his baseball career, and a section titled Ben Revere TV. In the Ben Revere TV section of the website fans are linked to videos on YouTube and Vimeo that feature or include Ben.

Talent Attach has also teamed up with Ben to give his fans on Facebook the best experience possible with a custom fan page. After creating a custom brand and logo for Ben we gave Ben’s fan page custom tabs that link to his webpage, Twitter account, and Ben Revere TV. With over three thousand likes since it’s recent launch, it is only a matter of time before Ben’s page becomes the model of what other athlete’s fan pages should look like.

Ben’s Twitter page background is currently in the works and will have the same feel as his Facebook fan page and website. We look forward to working with Ben as he becomes a MLB star and a crowd favorite with thousands of fans who can keep in touch through his excellent use of social media.
